Why Does A Safe Need A Dehumidifier?
The one thing that will slowly but surely destroy your safe and its contents is moisture. Think about it, the only time fresh air ever gets into the safe is when you open the door to get something out. Most of the time your stored items will be locked away in the dark and damp space; the breeding ground for mold and fungi.
This is something that would eventually happen to all safes especially if you live in a humid environment. Having said that, there is a simple way to avoid any moisture damage and that is to use a gun safe dehumidifier.
This is a vital tool for prolonging the life of your safe. If you are going to spend hundreds of dollars on a gun safe then spending a few extra dollars on a dehumidifier is not going to make that much of a dent in your wallet. This is certainly so if you consider how much it is saving you in the long run. This tool will protect the interior of your safe thus protecting all your stored items.
What Does A Gun Safe Dehumidifier Do?
Simply put, it eliminates moisture from inside the safe by soaking it up from corner to corner. The interior will be kept dry and humidity free. Without a dehumidifier rust and corrosion can spread within the safe. The most vulnerable items in a safe would be any paper documents, jewellery and guns.
Guns are made of metal and will rust over time if not stored in the right conditions. Moisture will get deep inside the workings of your gun and corrode it from the inside out. Any ammo stored in the safe will also be damaged over time.
Without a dehumidifier the lifespan of your safe will be reduced and its contents will corrode away.
Types of Dehumidifiers for Protecting Your Guns
There are two main types to look out for and these are the Electric dehumidifier and the Desiccant dehumidifier. Which you choose depends on the type of gun safe you have and also how much you are willing to spend.
Desiccant dehumidifiers come in different sizes but are most commonly small packets containing special materials that absorb moisture like a sponge. They are fairly cheap to buy and require no electricity for use. All you have to do is just place one or two packets, (depending on the size of your safe), inside your safe and let it do its job. There are many different brands of desiccant dehumidifiers and a good quality version should last for quite a number of months.
A good idea would be to have a couple spare dehumidifiers so that you can swap the used ones with a fresh batch. I must point out that these can be reused, so don’t think you need to buy a new packet every few months. All you do is simply bake the used desiccant in an oven as per the instructions and it is ready to go again.
By far the most sought after moisture absorber is the electric dehumidifier. It is the higher end version of a gun safe dehumidifier and is highly efficient in removing moisture from a safe. Unlike the packet versions of the desiccant dehumidifiers the electric variety uses heat to eliminate moisture from within the safe. They use an exposed heating element called the ‘golden rod’, to evaporate any moisture.
Condensation will be prevented due to the high temperatures created by the golden rod. The safes internal structure and its contents will be protected. These are the better of the two types of dehumidifier but with the electric versions you will require a connection to an exterior power source.
This means that your safe would need a hole to allow the wires to pass through. If this is a problem then there are rechargeable electric dehumidifiers that do the same job and are a fair bit smaller and easier to handle.
Which Is the Best Gun Safe Dehumidifier?
My personal opinion is that to really make sure you protect your safe and its contents I would have a combination of both the desiccant dehumidifiers and the electric dehumidifiers. At the end of the day the all perform a similar task and so combining the two styles should create better results.
Before you buy a gun safe dehumidifier check the size of your safe and read the instructions to figure out how many dehumidifiers may be needed for its interior volume. Whatever you do, don’t keep your guns and ammo in a safe without a dehumidifier. This will not only cost you money but may even be dangerous.
