This is a Stack-On fire resistant 28 long gun safe with the usual Total Defense special security design. It is the big brother to the very popular TD14-22-SB-E-S 22 long gun safe. It also has a lot of very useful features and a low price point as a fire and water safe.
All Total Defense Stack-On safes are approved by the CA Department of Justice as meeting their standards for firearm safety. Stack-On have been in the security safe business for many years and take quality testing very seriously.

The interior of this Stack-On TD14-28-SB-E-S fire safe comes as standard with a fully fitted carpet and 6 adjustable shelves. All the shelves are removable, for storing larger items, except for the center divider. What is great about the inside of this safe is that almost all areas can be used as some kind of organized storage. It is easy enough to just have one large empty area, which is an option if that is what you want; however it is always helpful to have some kind of storage organization.
This is why attached to the inside of the door is a factory installed door storage panel with Velcro pockets, straps and selected zippered bags. These can store smaller items such as ammo or small gun parts or even items unrelated to guns such as keys, cash, jewelry, etc. You can also hang your handguns here using the special holsters.
This fire resistant safe comes with special Stack-On patented long gun barrel rests that do not compress or deteriorate over time. There are also patented standoffs perfect for easy storage and protection of your scoped rifles. These provide one position of storage rather than taking up two or three times the amount of space in a safe.
The interior is designed to hold 28 rifles or shotguns or can be converted to hold 14 firearms plus extra space for additional storage. Its exterior dimensions are 29-1/4″W X 25-1/2″D X 59″H with interior dimensions of 26.89″W X 19.29″D X 56.69″H or 17.02 (29409 Cubic Inches). It is bigger than its little brother the Stack-On TD14-22-SB-E-S and nearly 100lbs heavier at around 562lbs. As an added bonus a factory installed electrical socket for charging or powering electronic devices is standard with this safe.
To help combat flooding this safe provides waterproofing protection via a waterproof seal which will protect the contents of your safe from water damage. A synthetic rubber gasket and other special seals around the safe body will keep water out and the contents dry. ETL has tested and verified that this Total Defense safe will remain waterproof in up to 2 feet of standing water for up to 72 hours.
Regarding moisture it may not be a good idea to store CDs or other electronic storage devices. Although these safes are built to keep as much of the moisture out as possible some moisture will still build up inside a safe that has been left closed for a long period. As a precaution I recommend you purchase a good gun dehumidifier to put inside.
Security
There are 5 extra-large 1.5 inch tapered live action locking bolts located on the opening side of the door and at the top and bottom of the door. 3 steel dead bolts are also included on the hinge side of the door.
These locking bolts provide up to 8 locking points and secure the door on all four edges for greater security. There is a large five spoke handle in the center of the door that rotates to extend and retract the live action bolts.
Total Defense safes are available with three number combination dial locks or electronic locks. This particular safe has an electronic lock system. The electronic lock is easy to program with your own code and it comes with a backup key incase the battery dies or you forget your password.
Batteries are accessible from the front of the safe which assures that you will never be locked out of your safe due to dead battery. A low battery warning light will flash on the electronic keypad to let you know that the batteries will need changing soon.
The doors are reinforced with steel and occupy flame retardant material that will create a protective fire wall within the safe. The door stripping around the edges of the door frame will expand to provide a seal to keep the contents secure in the event of a fire. The safe has been tested and verified by ETL an independent testing lab to be fire resistant for 1 hour in up to 1400 degrees.
Things to consider
I will repeat what I wrote in my review of the smaller version of this safe and say that it really is a fantastic deal considering the features attached to the model. Stack-On know what their customers want and try to keep the quality of safes high while also keeping prices low. I think the Total Defense brand series in particular are a very good investment because of this.
This Stack-On TD14-28-SB-E-S fire resistant waterproof safe will be a perfect buy for those who have a lot of guns but do not want to be spending thousands of dollars on a safe. You get all the important features needed to keep your firearms secure just as you would if you had spent $5000 on a higher end safe…with the exception of a few additions of course.
As with the smaller safe I cannot fault this model except for some cosmetic things such as the carpet not being cut to fit properly and that the electronic keypad may be a little temperamental sometimes. There is plenty of storage space for handguns, long guns, ammo and anything else you decide to put in there. The electronic lock includes a drill resistant, hardened steel plate behind the lock for greater security. A backup key is included. Batteries are accessible from the front of the safe and are easy to replace.
Holds 28 long guns with space for ammo and has 6 Adjustable shelves. It has a good warranty and will even cover loss of contents due to theft, fire or flood…but make sure you read the fine print. Another quality and competitively priced fireproof safe from the Stack-On Total Defense series.
