SentrySafe X105 Small Safe Review | Easy to use with Tough Deadlocks

SentrySafe X105 Review

SentrySafe X105 Small Safe

Let me start off by noting that this Sentry Safe X105 is not a fireproof safe or waterproof safe. However, for a small safe it will complement a family home or a student’s apartment or dorm room. It is a safe so of course it does offer basic security but nothing that will keep a determined burglar at bay.

So, it is not a “High” security safe although its creation was not for this purpose. It was designed to be a good quality, strong and affordable home safe that would be used for storing smaller items that are most likely used on a regular basis.

If you are looking specifically for an anti-theft safe or something waterproof or fireproof then take a look at some of the other safes on offer on this site more fitted to those needs. Usually, the larger the safe the more security features it has so smaller safes tend to focus on basic security.

This is a strong and well constructed safe and although it won’t keep a professional thief from finding their way in, it will keep an opportunist thief at bay. The SentrySafe X105 is built for the purposes of safeguarding your valuables from casual theft in the home, office, schools, college dorms, etc.

Who is the Sentry Safe X105 Designed For?

Sentrysafe X105

Here is the type of safe everyone should have in their homes. It is fairly small sized but roomy enough for many items. You could have this unit tucked away in a small closet somewhere where you would throw in all your important daily items and lock them up for the night.

Maybe you are someone that has a lot of important information stored on your laptop. Maybe your laptop is your work and so keeping that particular item safely locked away for the night should be a priority.

There is a metal shelf inside that can be removed to store bulkier items. If you take the shelf out you will be able to fit two 14-inch laptops inside with room to spare for other assorted valuables.

With the shelf in place you will find that the Sentry Safe X105 is just the right size to put away important daily items such as prescription drugs, car keys, jewelry, cell phone or a little money. For added security you have the option of adding a high tensile cable which feeds through the inside of the safe and exits out the back through a tiny hole. The exterior cable can then be wrapped around a permanent base in the floor or wall and then locked into position.

Some people have used this safe to put handguns and ammo in but I personally wouldn’t advise this. For safety against gun theft the best thing to do would be to purchase a gun safe.

Sentry Safe X105 Construction And Design

As mentioned above this is a durable safe just the right size for home security. Also for the budget minded, this home safe is well designed, extremely sturdy and has an easy-to-operate electronic keypad that opens with your chosen security code.

The combination can be set to use up to 8 digits of your choice.  Once you set your electronic combination, the safe is set to go. If a problem occurs, you can override the keypad with a key.

Generally, you don’t need to use a key in addition to the combination lock when you open the safe. The emergency override key should only be needed if the batteries in the safe go dead.

The dual access gives an easily accessible yet secure entry method. The SentrySafe X105 comes with 2 keys. It has a strong, heavy door with two deadlocks used to prevent entry. As stated, the interior is a fair size at 8.7 x 16.8 x 11.6 inches and even has a gray carpet on the bottom.

Conclusion

For basic security this safe will do just fine and for the price it is sold at I would say it is a bargain. Keeping safety in mind, I would only use this small safe for my daily used items. I would keep my more delicate valuables in a fireproof and waterproof high security safe.

Items such as important paperwork, photo albums, passports, etc would be the type of items I would put elsewhere. There is no reason why you couldn’t keep these items in this safe apart from the fact that it isn’t fire protected.

For additional security the Sentry Safe X105 comes with a cable system that you can use to lock around things such as a cross member under a bed, or desk, etc. I would strongly advise using this option as it would deter the casual burglar.

Also, there are pre-drilled holes so it can be bolted from the bottom or back to a floor or wall. Due to its small size, this safe should definitely be bolted to something. If you add these additional security options to the safe then all you really need to worry about is fire.

PROS
  • The combination can be as short as 2 digits or as long as 8 digits.
  • You only need two AA for the electronic coding.

CONS
  • The door knob is a little small and has a slippery surface.

How To Bolt Down The SentrySafe X105

It is strongly recommended that you bolt this safe down. Even though this unit does provide a certain amount of security it would be beneficial to add the extra options that are being offered.

Sentrysafe X105 Small Safe

All hardware is provided with this safe and so all you need to do is set up the holes for positioning. Get started by running through the 4 steps below:

  1. First pick out a good location for the safe. Remember this is going to make it permanent so make sure it is somewhere that will not be in your way.
  2. Set the safe in place and mark its position by using a pencil to drawer through the pre-drilled holes at the bottom of the safe or at the back of the safe. Choose one of the options, (floor or wall), as it is not recommended to bolt to both. If you are going to bolt to the wall make sure there are no internal electrical wires in the walls where you will be drilling.
  3. Now just move the safe away and drill the holes you just marked. Make sure to check the diameter of the hardware provided so that you can drill the right sized hole.
  4. Now simply use the bolts, washers and anchors to fasten the safe to the floor or wall.

Operating The Electronic Lock

First thing you need to do is add batteries to this X105 safe. Always use the alkaline variety and never use rechargeable batteries.

To install the batteries just remove the cover which is located between the knob and the keypad. Use the provided override key to unlock the door. Open, and you will find on the inside back of the door is a small battery cover. Remove this and add the batteries.

When you first receive the safe it will have its default code number. For optimum security it is advisable to re-program a code that you personally select. To do this:

  1. Remove the battery cover inside the door and press the little button within its compartment.  You will notice a yellow light turn on meaning it is ready to receive your new code.
  2. Pick a code, you have a choice from 2 to 8 digits, and then enter it on the pad followed by the “Hash” key. At this point the light will turn off indicating that the new code has been accepted.
  3. If there is a fail somewhere then the yellow light will begin to flash and beep. All you have to do is start the process again.
