Stack-On GS-8 Gun Safe Review

Stack-On GS-8 Long Gun Safe
  Stack-On GS-8 Gun Safe

Ok, the Stack-On GS-8 gun safe is green and for some this may not be the ideal color but it does have an old school real safe look about it that I kind of like.

This is an economy safe for those of you who want good quality but don’t have a huge spending budget. It is not fireproof or waterproof but then that can be expected for such a low price tag.

It is designed to hold 8 long guns such as rifles and shotguns and can also be used to provide basic security for other valuables that you may have.

Considering its low price it does have some nice features such as a 3-number drill-resistant combination lock, hardened steel plate behind the lock, concealed hinges and 3 live action locking bolts.

Who Needs The Stack-On GS-8 Gun Safe?

For starters, any long gun owner who likes the color green is sure to like this safe. If green isn’t your color then you may want to look at another safe because this gun safe is manufactured only in green.

This unit will benefit you if you have up to 8 long guns that need to be stored away somewhere safe. Maybe you have your guns spread out in different areas of your home and just want one secure home for them all.

If you have kids then keeping them away from access to your rifles and other firearms is probably one of your main priorities. The StackOn GS8 will provide a secure place to keep your guns and cannot be easily tampered with.

As mentioned above this gun safe is not fireproof.  Therefore anyone specifically looking for protection against a house fire or flooding will not find what they are looking for in this safe. It may hold up in a small fire and may protect against a certain amount of water but it has not been certified to do so.

Stack-On GS-8 Gun Safe Design And Construction

Stackon GS-8

Its dimensions are 12.4 x 15.5 x 53 inches giving it a fair amount of room for different sized guns. It has been designed to fit 8 long guns but of course that all depends on the size of the guns and what attachments they may have. Realistically speaking we can say that 6 long guns with various attachments will fit very comfortably inside with some space free.

You can fit any long gun in the safe of up to 52 inches but you will have to remove the top shelf for this. If you want the shelf to stay then you are looking at around 46 inches max gun length. Having said that the removable shelf is positioned in the back of the unit so longer guns can be stored in the front along the side walls.

The whole interior is fully carpeted with barrel rests and standoffs for storing scoped rifles allowing for better space utilization.

The Stack-On GS-8 Gun Safe looks and feels solid with its sides and back being made of heavy-gauge sheet steel and is welded at the corners and joints. It has a heavy duty door frame with a door that is at least 2 inches thick.

The unit offers pry-resistant protection with its concealed hinges providing greater security and a peace of mind knowing your guns cannot be got to that easily.

Its size and weight allow it to be installed in a wide variety of places. You may find that somewhere like the corner of a closet would be a good choice in order to prevent casual thieves from having room to try and pry it from the wall. With limited access to the sides and back even the most determined thief would think twice about having a go at breaking in.

As this Stack-On GS-8 Combination Safe is less than 200 lbs it would be advisable to have it anchored down. This is for safety as well as security as you may find that the gun safe will tip over with the door opened if not bolted down or anchored in some way.

Stack-On GS-8 Gun Safe Locking Mechanism

It uses a three number combination lock system that is drill-resistant with a hardened steel plate that is located behind the lock for greater security.

There are three live-action ram-tough locking bolts and 3 steel dead bolts that provide 6 locking points, top middle and bottom. The bolts are easily retracted and suspended by a swiveling handle in the center of the door. With this type of locking mechanism already you can see that it will take more than the casual thief with a small set of tools to get into this thing.

PROS
  • Has a tough drill-resistant locking system.
  • The interior carpeting adds to the overall style of the safe.
  • Requires no batteries or external power supply.
CONS
  • The combination can’t be chosen, you are stuck with the factory setting.

Conclusion

The StackOn GS-8 is a definite contender in the long gun safe collection. It is sturdy enough to offer just the right security for home and very simple to use with its combination lock.

A good choice for anyone with up to 8 long guns who prefers combination safes over digital safes. It is small enough to hide away in a closet somewhere and can be bolted down for added security. A no frills, good all around gun safe for a low price.
